Extreme Power "Soot Yord Palung" Gym is a Traditional School of Muay Thai. We're actually the 'Only' Traditional Muay Thai gym in all of San Diego county. Traditional means, old school hard core instruction, guidance and training-No fluff!?... Yes my gym/school is a business, however, student learning is my biggest priority!.. 95% of my students couldn't care less about actually competing for belts and trophies. Those that seek me out are the serious types of students that want to learn real Muay Thai and or USA Amateur Boxing, for personal reasons. In other words, they are sick and tired of the b/s that's being pawned off as legitimate instruction at the larger facilities. ( Which basically are only holding cardio kickboxing/boxing classes.) It doesn't matter if you are a green as grass beginner or a world class professional in Muay Thai. I'm a master instructor of Muay Thai. I've produced 2 world class Muay Thai professional Champion/fighters, 4 Semi-Pro National Amateur Champions and 15 Amateur Muay Thai Champions, by myself. It's a very family oriented environment here-We all get along very well. I set the tone. Non sense and disrespect is not tolerated, AT ALL!!!... Sawasdee khab _/|\_

I met Ajahn Ruben in 2001 when he began instructing my son in Boxing and Muay Thai. I have tried other gyms that offer similar instruction, but none come close to the authenticity and quality at Extreme Power Gym. Ajahn Ruben takes a personal interest in every member of this gym. He uses his years of experience, training and knowledge to make each class and personal training session valuable.
My daughter and I attend the adult classes and open gym training. She enjoys the disciplined training and the supportive atmosphere.
My grandson attends the kid's classes, and he absolutely loves and respects Ajahn Ruben. Ajahn Ruben has taught him better listening skills, focus, discipline, and the importance of being teachable. I have watched the transformation of a quiet, shy kid into a confident, strong young man. Thank you Ajahn Ruben!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 1 - Amanda G.San Francisco, CA17385Jul 29, 2023

Can't recommend this gym enough. Ajahn Ruben gave me guidance on how to not only defend myself, but to be confident in doing so. I only signed up for a year, but plan on going back for private lessons. I also plan on enrolling my child as soon as she is old enough. His method of teaching is simple: listen, follow instructions and don't give up.
If you're hesitant about learning a new skill like this or putting yourself out there, don't be. His class has students with minimal-no Muay Thai background all the way through advanced students. Highly recommend!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nichol H.Fallbrook, CA012Feb 23, 2020
Our son was bullied at school and that's when we knew he needed help. He needed to know how to handle situations like this and also know how to defend himself in case he had to. Ahjan Ruben has been incredible. He not only teaches the kids about Muay Thai but he also incorporates his life experiences throughout the practice. He is hard on the kids when they need it and explains the reasonings for everything. He has helped my son be more confident and a better listener. I highly recommend this gym and will not go anywhere else!!

I cannot rate this gym/academy high enough. Ajahn Ruben can take anyone who walks in and make them better. Top level instruction and guidance in a no nonsense environment. If you are looking to really learn authentic Muay Thai this is the spot. No corners cut! Ajahn Ruben is as knowledgeable and professional as they come and treats all of his students with the same care and respect. Ajahn Ruben's old school mentality is tried and true and he will definitely Guve you all the tools you need to excel in Muay Thai/ boxing. I would recommend this gym/academy to anyone who is serious about learning Muay Thai or who intends on bettering themselves.

Adjahn Ruben offers authentic training in Muay Thai and Boxing. This is a unique gym in that he takes a personal interest in everyone and gives one hundred percent of himself at every class and training session. It doesn't matter what your age or experience level is, Adjahn Ruben meets you at your level, then patiently works with you to improve both physically and mentally.
I have been part of this gym for nearly seventeen years. I have watched my kids grow in physical strength, learn to listen and focus, and increase their confidence through attending classes and private training.
No other gym in the area comes close to this kind of quality.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Mario M.Escondido, CA01Aug 29, 2020
I highly recommend Extreme Power Gym. One of the best if not the best Muay Thai training in California. Ajahn Ruben is a great teacher. He cares for his students' mental and physical wellbeing. Ajahn Ruben is a very wise man; every class he teaches his students valuable life lessons. Listen to him and follow his instructions and you will see progress.

Not typically a fan of leaving bad reviews but this is warranted. Signed up for a membership in September 2017 after training for 6 months found out I had a hernia in my back. I got billed for the next 6 months which is to be expected even though I didn't go to one session. They auto renewed my contract after the first year for another year even though I need surgery and I moved locations, not to mention not attending a session on 6 months. The owner of the gym knew about my situation. Please be aware of the business practices of extreme power. If you don't cancel you membership within 30 days of the next year they will lock you into another year contract. I spoke with the company that does the contracts for extreme power and there is no limit to the amount of years they will renew your contract. If you enjoy Martial Arts please do your due diligence before you sign any contract with them.

Quinn, I’m just now seeing your review. I remember your situation very well. The actions weren’t played out as you expressed. Yes you mentioned your medical condition. But you never provided any documentation until long after the fact. You ran into me several times at LA Fitness in Oceanside where you were lifting weights and doing cardio just fine. You said multiple times while there that you were going to get the paperwork to me.
My business goes in accordance with the contracts agreed upon. Word of mouth is not confirmation of a medical situation or location. Once you turned in your documents, that was the conclusion of your agreement. - Jose R.Oceanside, San Diego, CA05Feb 19, 2018
Discipline, courage, courteous and subservient are only a few things you will get out of Ajahn Ruben Rowell. He will not baby you or sugar coat anything about training in his gym and to be honest in traditional Muay Thai, you need to be tough. His classes are not egotistical like most gyms out there. A very pragmatic environment is what you will experience once you walk through the door. Once you start training you need to put your big girl or big boy pants because there is only one way to learn traditional Muay Thai and it's his way. After just one session my son was hooked.

I am 47yo and have been training at this gym for about 6mo. I've always been active in extreme sports including surfing, snowboarding, motocross, football, rodeo, etc. I have always wanted to get involved in some form of martial arts / combat sport. I've tried many gyms over the years only to be disinterested quickly for a variety of reasons. Then I found Extreme Power Gym. Its exactly what I was looking for. The people are very encouraging in helping me grow and learn. I enjoy challenging myself and that's a must here. If you're lazy and want to buy a new color belt every few months, go somewhere else. If you want to challenge yourself to work hard and the prize you desire is real results then this is for you. Absolutely my favorite sport at this point in life.
